Global Public Health minor

Learn more about the health issues affecting populations in the United States and worldwide, the factors that contribute to existing and emerging issues, and how to develop interventions that improve health for all.

The minor in Global Public Health focuses on health issues affecting populations in the United States and low- to middle-economic status countries worldwide. It can serve as a precursor to further study in public health, other health professions or any fields in which population health is a relevant concern.

Students complete courses about a variety of public health issues, factors that contribute to existing and emerging issues, and applicable approaches to address and intervene. The minor augments and enhances many different undergraduate bachelor degree programs and expands students’ knowledge and comprehension of issues affecting humans domestically and internationally.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the undergraduate minor in Global Public Health, students will be better prepared to:

  • Compare and contrast examples of major domestic and international public health issues
  • Discuss various global approaches/strategies for identification, response and intervention to address and attempt to resolve common public health issues
  • Identify political, cultural, behavioral and socio-economic factors related to global public health issues
  • Work effectively in international settings
  • Adapt to diverse cultures, perceptions and approaches
  • Discuss major currents of global change and issues they raise
  • Communicate across cultural and linguistic boundaries
  • Comprehend the international dimension of one's field of study.

Curriculum

The Global Public Health minor requires a minimum of 15 credit hours. No more than 6 credit hours can overlap between the general education curriculum and a minor. Review the complete minor requirements.

Declaring the minor

The minor may be approved by the student's college or school advising office to be added to your degree audit report. It is recommended to declare the minor as soon as possible. It must be declared by the time the student applies for graduation.
